the Verve’s A Northern Soul is a relatively unknown album on this side of the ocean, most of America never really heard of The Verve before Urban Hymns, and therefore this record was relegated to an almost prequel-like status.
A Northern Soul is a window into the tormented soul living inside of Richard Ashcroft, with History being a perfect example of how epic this aforementioned tortured soul can make a song sound. the opening line “I wander lonely streets behind where the old Thames does flow/ And in every face I meet reminds me of what I have run from” perfectly sets the tone to this introspective march.
despite all the Bittersweet Symphony success and drama, Richard always was a true songwriter wearing his heart on his sleeve, singing every lyric as if to save his own life. he’s thinking about history, and we can’t help but think about history. I see a man who wants to share his tale, and succeeds in doing it so beautifully.
