In 1992, on their first visit to New York, The Verve (or just Verve as they were known then) set up their gear on the back of a truck and drove around Times Square playing extended versions of A Man Called Sun. Richard recalls: “It was amazing! Everyone was dancing, from the pimps to the prostitutes to the tourists. Everywhere we went, people got into this rhythm and started dancing.”

After having been together officially for only 12 months, The Verve (or just Verve as they were known then) signed to Hut Records in September 1991. Once back in Wigan, the advance of the record deal was spent on drugs, food, beer and… lasagne. Richard apparently had lasagne delivered to his door every day for six months.
